Harrison Street's Moira Kelley: Top Ambassador for Prioritizing Health in Senior & Student Housing
As part of our ongoing series featuring the companies and individuals leading the healthy building movement, we honor one of this year’s Top Fitwel Ambassadors, Moira Kelley of Harrison Street.
AT A GLANCE
Moira has led Fitwel Champion Harrison Street in positively impacting the health and wellness of its building’s communities for the past two years. Her contributions helped pave the way for Harrison Street to continue its streak of winning multiple Best in Building Health awards; this year, four of the company’s projects were recognized in the 2022 Highest Scoring Projects category for its work with the Springs Living, DLC Europe, and CA Ventures.

What does Best in Building Health mean to you?
Being recognized by this year's Best in Building Health awards confirms Harrison Street's commitment to the health and well-being of our building occupants. This is a responsibility we take seriously, especially given the residential nature of some of our asset sectors like senior and student housing.
Why did you choose to become a Fitwel Ambassador?
I heard about the Fitwel Ambassador Program after joining Harrison Street to lead the "S" strategy for the firm. Much of our social strategy to date focuses on occupant physical and mental health and wellness, and we have Fitwel Certification as a goal for our assets. I wanted to become a Fitwel Ambassador to not only better understand the certification and process, but also to become a resource for our teams at our assets.

What have you valued most about being an Ambassador?
Becoming a Fitwel Ambassador has equipped me with a better understanding of how human health and well-being can be enhanced through the built environment, in an equitable way that serves all of a building's occupants. It has also provided a technical understanding of the relevant scorecards and strategies for Harrison Street’s target sectors.
For example, Harrison Street and a handful of our operating partners worked with the Center for Active Design to develop a scorecard to certify Senior Living communities, which operate very differently than traditional multifamily residential. A unique aspect of this scorecard is that in addition to the residents living in these communities, it also considers the health of employees who work there.
