What motivates the UL Solutions team to pursue Fitwel Certification for customers?
JH: We’re driven by a few key factors, including strong market demand from an increased emphasis on health and well-being in the built environment amid COVID-19 and climate change adaptation. As stakeholders and owners place greater focus on creating healthier spaces, Fitwel Certification aligns with their goals and enhances GRESB reporting outcomes. These elements collectively showcase the growing need for evidence-based health standards and solidify our commitment to advancing well-being through sustainable building practices. By supporting the use of Fitwel, we  gain recognition for our team’s Fitwel Ambassadors and achieve awards like Most People Impacted Across Building Scorecards in 2023.

Why did you choose to become a Fitwel Ambassador?
JH: I was encouraged to join the Fitwel Ambassador program by industry leaders and came across information about it in several industry newsletters. During the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the focus on human health and well-being was front and center, I recognized that Fitwel offered a valuable path for enhancing these aspects in buildings. It felt like a natural fit for my commitment to improving health outcomes through sustainable design.

How has becoming a Fitwel Ambassador impacted your life and/or career?
JH:
It has pushed me to seek higher-performing buildings both as potential residences and as workplaces. Additionally, I have adopted some of the health-related strategies into my personal life, from actively working on drinking more water by ensuring that I have a full water bottle with me throughout the day to reading nutritional labeling on snacks as a way to work on my eating habits. As I encourage our customers to do with their own properties, I also work to utilize public transportation as much as possible and, when possible, ride my bike.

How are you using Fitwel to advance your company's and customers’ ESG strategies?
JH:
Fitwel Strategies help deliver tangible results by enhancing various facets of ‘S’-related ESG performance. Certified properties often have higher occupant satisfaction, improved employee engagement for employers, and stronger community relations - all outcomes that align with our customer’s goals.
