AT A GLANCE

Awards:

Highest Scoring Design Project, Multi-Tenant Whole Building v2.1

Project: Corgan / Vari | VariSpace Coppell, Coppell, TX

Having pioneered one of the first flexible sit-to-stand workstations to promote a healthy lifestyle in the workplace, it’s no surprise Vari prioritized the health and well-being of their own employees’ office at their new headquarters in Coppell, Texas. As the third building in the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area to be Fitwel-certified and the first in Texas to receive a Best in Building Health award in its category, this esteemed recognition is a testament to their mission.

The Class A office building, developed in collaboration with leading architecture and design firm Corgan (and Fitwel Top 20 Ambassador Emily Frazer-Smith), building designer BOKA Powell, and construction company Adolfson & Peterson (AP), is expected to not only attract more than 850 employees to Coppell but create numerous job opportunities to benefit the local community as well.

We sat down with the leaders of the innovative, social-impact-driven project team behind VariSpace Coppell to learn more.

What Fitwel strategies did you use to achieve your healthy building goals?
JL: VariSpace Coppell's design purposefully promotes a healthy, active lifestyle. Our one-of-a-kind facility incorporates amenities more commonly found in "big buildings" into a smaller building footprint, distinguishing it from many other buildings of its size. We have outdoor green spaces with easy access to walking trails from all three floors, which was carefully considered during the design and construction process. Other health-promoting strategies we prioritized include installing the latest technology for indoor air ventilation and filtration, providing workstations with electric standing desks and an on-site fitness center, and making healthy food and filtered water available at multiple, convenient locations. Physical activity is also encouraged through the placement of trash and recycling bins in central locations, as well as motivational signage encouraging people to take the stairs. The building also has a beautifully designed monumental main staircase in an open-concept lobby, along with floor to deck windows for an abundance of natural light.

How have you seen Fitwel positively impact your property's occupants and the surrounding community?
JL: We partner closely with our surrounding communities to host events and explain our business rationale for building a Fitwel certified building.  Our tenants love the energy that comes with working in a Fitwel building and we happily host guests to enjoy our amenities and facilities.

Today, we have so much more information to inform how we build a workspace, which is fantastic because people spend so much of their lives working. We no longer focus on creating an office that is only comfortable with the essentials. Rather, Corgan Architecture assisted us in designing a workspace that addresses occupants' physical and emotional well-being holistically. In addition to natural light, VariSpace Coppell provides indoor air ventilation and filtration, flavored filtered water, and healthy food options, an on-site fitness center, multiple stairwells, active workstations (with Vari electric standing desks, of course!) and even centralized trash and recycling bins encourage movement. Finally, Corgan and Vari delivered VariSpace Coppell as an innovative destination that people want to visit because it provides a 360-degree view of their physical and emotional well-being.

How does Fitwel add value to VariSpace Coppell?
JM: VariSpace Coppell is setting the standard for the future of work. For potential tenants, the building’s Fitwel certification is an important benefit and point of differentiation. Today more than ever, people expect organizations to demonstrate that they care about the health and well-being of employees. Implementing Fitwel strategies helps to make the wellness amenities more visible and accessible.

How does Fitwel align with Vari’s mission and values?
JM: At Vari, our mission is to create workspaces that elevate people, culture, and communities, so we strongly believe in healthy workplaces and organizations. Making VariSpace Coppell a certified healthy work environment was a top priority when we were designing it. We are proud that VariSpace Coppell, as one of the first buildings in Dallas-Fort Worth to achieve Fitwel certification, demonstrates to our team and tenants that we are committed to their health and wellness.
